Relief for Haiti

Haiti Hygeine Kit
Assembly Bonanza
The United Church of Christ
has launched an emergency appeal for Haiti after a major earthquake
struck the country. Thousands of people are feared dead and
countless have been left homeless. The quake, measuring 7.0 on
the Richter Scale, struck 10 miles southwest of the capital on
January 12. An after-shock measuring 6.1 hit a week later on
January 20.
One Great Hour of Sharing funds are being rushed to our
Haitian partners to support their initial emergency response.
As damage assessments are made and plans for relief, recovery and
rehabilitation are developed, additional support will be
shared. The need is massive.
How You Can Help:
1. Pray for the people of
Haiti, their leaders and emergency and humanitarian aid workers.
2. Please help the people of
Haiti by making gifts payable to EvUCC marked for "UGHS - Haiti
Earthquake Relief"
3. Send gifts made out to
Wider Church Ministries and marked in the memo portion "OGHS -
Haiti Earthquake Relief" to Illinois South Conference or to
Wider Church Ministries, 700 Prospect Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44115
5. Hygiene and Baby Kits are
urgently needed for survivors in Haiti. This is one very concrete
and "hands-on" thing that church groups can do. Church
World Service has issued an urgent call for Gifts
of the Heart Kits.
Thank for your compassion and
support!

Revolutionary Evolution
Tuesday, February 2 at 7:00pm
Thursday, February 11 at 7:00pm
EvUCC is part of a national
association committed to working towards building bridges between
religion and science. For too long, these areas of study have
contentiously bred anxiety and animosity alike. UCC churches
across the US will be preaching on this topic on February 14 this
year. To open up the dialogue even further, we will be having
2 open-invitation discussions in February, led by both Pastor Will
and Pastor Chris, discussing how we can understand God's hand
working through creation, history, and scientific advances.
We'll talk specifically about evolution, creationism, form criticism
of the Bible, and various prominent views held over the years.
Come with an open mind, questions of the heart, and a desire to
grow. Sign up in the Narthex.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
We are starting a new group for
people interested in providing prayer shawls for those in need of
comfort. We will begin meeting this week on Tuesday evening
from 7-9pm and Thursday morning from 9-11am in the youth room of the
church (in the basement). Join us when you can! Yarn
will be provided. Interested people should contact Gayle
Joyner. All skill levels are welcome, even beginners who
are willing to learn.
Help World
Hunger

Play a fun
vocabulary game! For each answer you get right, 20 grains of
rice will be donated through the UN World Food Program to help
end hunger!

Church-Wide
Garage Sale
Is your
basement, attic, garage and closets over-flowing with stuff?
Now is your chance to get ride of the clutter and support a good
project at the same time!
The
Mission Board is sponsoring a church-wide garage sale Friday,
March 12, and Saturday, March 13. The sale will be held in the
social hall and will be 6:00 - 8:00pm on Friday, and 8:00am - 2:00pm
on Saturday. Proceeds from the sale will go to the DuBois
Lodge project.
Items
can be brought to the church March 7 - 11 and left in the
designated corner in the social hall. You do not need to price
the items - the committee will do that for you.
Since
the Auction Committee will no longer be accepting used items, this
is your opportunity to get rid of all the little "stuff"
you don't need or want anymore!
If you
have questions, please contact chair Paula Redman or any member of
the MIssion Board.

Upcoming Bible Studies
Reflections for Lent and
Easter Bible Study
Pastor Phil Chapman will be
leading a 6 week journey of discovery into the life of Lent.
The first class will be Thursday, February 18 at 7:00pm.
Young Adult Bible Study
You are all enthusiastically
invited to attend a new Bible study that will be starting Thursday,
February 18 at 7:00pm. This weekly Bible study will meet
to discuss the first and second letters of Paul to Timothy. In
these letters, Paul passes on advice and wisdom to the Christians
who will carry on in God's service, and while his words may speak to
all believers, particular guidance is directed toward young
leaders. As God's energetic "young" leaders, ages
19-35, this study is for you! Led by Alicia VerDuin.
Sign up sheet is in the church Narthex.
NERD ALERT! Bible Study
Waa, waa, waaa! Oh no,
that's the Nerd Alert siren going haywire! What's a Nerd Alert
you ask? It's only the newest, no holds-barred Bible study
that is sweeping EvUCC. Join Pastor Will on Tuesday nights
starting February 23 from 8:00-9:00pm for an in-depth study
on the book of Judges. This is a study that will take you deep
into the text; "Why is this word used here, What story are they
referring to, Why would he light the foxes' tails on fire?"
Being a nerd when it comes to the Bible is a GOOD thing!
Judges has some of the most exciting and adventurous stories in the
entire Bible, hands down! Don't believe me? Come be a
Holy Nerd and join Pastor Will for this 8-week study and come away
with some serious Old Testament knowledge that will help open up the
Scriptures for you! Sign up sheet in the Narthex.
